British artist Tim Etchells uses neon and LED lamps to create light sculptures that explore the playful and poetic nature of language. With his simple illuminated texts, he wants to create stories, stir emotions and cause confusion.
The text in We Wanted comes from the Cat Power song “Colors and the Kids”, the lyrics of which have long had an impact on Etchells. When the text is removed from its context, transformed into illuminated letters and displayed in a living environment, it becomes something else entirely.
“I want my art to inspire ideas and create playful interactions in the public environment. The art is both public and private at the same time, as each viewer sees it in different ways and interprets it according to his or her own experiences. What I find most fascinating is that the art is always different when placed in a dialogue with different environments,” Etchells says.
Etchells has two installations at this year’s Lux Helsinki. His other installation Revolution can be seen at the Old Student House (Vanha ylioppilastalo).
